Arielle Cohen invites the public to support children with lost limbs who are training for a triathlon at an event Sunday in Riverwoods.

RIVERWOODS, IL — Arielle Turover Cohen is on a mission. The Riverwoods-based author wants to build confidence in all children, especially those that may have been bullied.

"Confident people help the world become a better place to live, because when you truly feel good about yourself, you become a contributor to society by performing acts of kindness, a true giver," Cohen said.

She has partnered with Dare2tri, a non-profit that supports youth with physical disabilities and visual impairments by building confidence through swimming, biking and running. This Sunday, June 13, Cohen is inviting children between the ages of 2 and 12, along with their families, to a special event at 2 Big Oak Lane in Riverwoods. There will be fun activities like an obstacle course, a pendulum swing, a fire pole, a zip-line, painting and gift-wrapping.

The free event is from 3 to 5 p.m. with options for sponsorship through purchasing gift bags.

Cohen herself is a former half-marathon runner and loves engaging children and families to have fun while at the same time supporting a good cause.

"I used to race and I know how it feels to be nervous. I think it takes a lot of courage to race with a disability and I love being able to support Dare2tri with this event and cheer the children on for their race," Cohen said.

She is the author of the book, "I Am Brave and Unafraid," the first in a series focusing on children’s emotional intelligence. Cohen herself experienced severe bullying during middle school, after leaving all her friends behind in California and moving to Chicago in sixth grade.

"I didn’t realize how the bullying killed my confidence. Raising your confidence is such an important tool, that can allow you to stand up for yourself against a bully," Cohen said. "And a bully who raises his or her confidence will stop bullying, because bullying comes from low self-esteem."
